Site Optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the procedure of
increasing the quality and volume of visitors to your
website generated from search engines queries (Google
Yahoo, MSN etc). The higher a site is found in the
search results the higher it "ranks". Meaning more
potential visitors. We would all love to be number one
on google and alike. It is important that your website
is firstly correctly setup and fully accessible to the
search engine spiders that visit your site. Without this
search engines will not know about your site and its
contents. So your site’s coding needs to be correct and
then your meta data needs to reflect key words or
phrases and most importantly the content should also
reflect key words properly placed. It is advisable to
use header tags to attach importantance to certain text.
Now it is down to the content on your site. A site with
a very short description of it services will fair less
compared to a site with plenty of quality content.
You can easily check with the search engines as to what
pages they have indexed on your site (site:yourname.com)
will return a list of pages that the search engine’s
know exist. For example site:kyero.com returns 913,000
known of this site. This does not mean that they attach
any real relevance to these pages. If you were to repeat
the query but then using site:kyero.com/* it returns a
very different result only 5,170 pages. These are the
pages of the site the search engines give more relevance
or weight to.
So key words, phrases & meta information are all
important. Meta tags are small bits of text information
inserted into the head of a webpage document. Here is an
example. It is now thought that engines give less
relevance to these, but they are still important.
<head>
<title>Tartan Teddy Bears</title>
<meta name='keywords' content="teddy, tartan, bears,
sale , scotland">
<meta name='description' content="Here at MacTavish
Teddy Bears we can supply a quality range of stuffed
bears dressed in your favourite tartan">
</head>
The most important thing on your site is quality
readable content and easy navigation so visitors return
to the site and even recommend it to others. For the
example above keywords for this site are “Teddy, Bears,
Tartan”. Once you have all this in place there are a
number of other factors that will then influence the
placement of your site in search engine query results.
It is important to think of your competitors and the
keywords that they use. If you are in a very competitive
market eg selling real estate in Spain you will want to
think of alternative keywords. If you type “villas for
sale Spain” into google you get 2,710,000 results. A
very competitive search term. So think about the words
you really want to be found for.
As mentioned on our
homepage “Back Links” are of
great importance. There are several ways to get good
back links. Join a one way linking scheme. Write and
submit articles about your site. Create a blog site with
relevant info and links. |
